After procuring some vanilla beans, I decided to try actually making vanilla extract. I’m home for Christmas, so I figured that I could get it all set up now and let the beans steep for 5 months, and then it will all be ready when I’m home again! I followed this process to make the vanilla, and just used the cheapest vodka I could find. Both of my parents are scientists, so obviously I used pyrex lab bottles – my mother even sterilized them for me herself! I almost used lab quality ethyl alcohol, but I wasn’t entirely certain that it was food grade so I just bought vodka instead. It’s looking promising so far, so I guess we’ll see how it turns out in June!
